When learning drums or any instrument, encouragement and support make a huge difference. At our drum school in Perth, we welcome parents to sit in on lessons. Not only does this create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, but it also helps students feel more motivated and confident as they learn.

We’ve set up the teaching space so parents have somewhere to relax while their child takes their drum lessons. One parent, whose child has been learning from me for some time, even found it so cozy that they would sometimes nod off on the couch during lessons—despite how loud the drums are!

For younger students, having a parent present can ease nerves and make lessons more enjoyable. It’s a simple way to show support and let your child know their efforts are valued. Even for older students, knowing someone is there to witness their progress often gives an extra boost of motivation.

Parents sitting in also helps build trust and communication. You get to see the teaching approach firsthand and know exactly what your child is working on. If something is challenging, it’s easier to talk with the teacher and work together to keep things moving forward. It also shows students that learning takes time and patience, which helps them stay realistic about their own progress.

Another benefit is the shared experience. When parents watch lessons, it often sparks conversations at home about music and practice. Kids enjoy showing off what they’ve learned, and parents get the chance to encourage them in the moment. This kind of encouragement builds confidence and helps drumming feel like a positive part of everyday life.

Of course, practice at home is still the key. The best progress happens when it becomes part of a regular routine. Even just 20 minutes before school, or a short session after homework, can make a huge difference. The students who go the furthest are usually the ones with parents involved—not just in lessons, but in helping music find its place in daily life.

With the support of a parent and guidance from a Perth drum teacher, students can get the most out of their lessons and enjoy the journey of making music.
